Oravský hrad (Orava Castle), up to 1.5 hours’ drive from Zakopane, clings to a tall rock above the Orava River, its walls stepping up the cliff in a way often compared to an eagle’s nest, and it counts among the finest medieval castles in Slovakia. You visit on the main route, about 1 hour 15 minutes, on your own or with a phone app in your language. It climbs through three levels: the Lower Castle with Renaissance interiors and the Thurzo Palace, the Middle Castle with historical, natural history and ethnographic exhibitions, and the Upper Castle, the oldest part of the complex.
About 45 minutes away, near Zuberec and Brestová at the foot of the Roháče, the Museum of the Orava Village shows how people here lived. Some 50 folk-style buildings spread over almost 20 hectares in five sections, from the better-off houses of the Lower Orava marketplace to a poor Goral settlement, plus a late-Gothic wooden church from the 15th century with its cemetery and a water-driven mill, sawmill and fulling mill. You get up to 1.5 hours to wander, and every August the museum hosts the international Podroháčske folk festival.
Your English-speaking driver takes you in a private air-conditioned vehicle; the day lasts about six hours.
