Zakopane, while a premier tourist destination, doesn’t have to break the bank. With a few smart choices regarding accommodation, transport, and activities, you can enjoy the stunning beauty of the Tatra Mountains and the vibrant Góral culture without overspending. The key to budget travel here is embracing the local way of life and planning ahead, especially if you are visiting during the peak seasons of Christmas, New Year’s, or the summer holidays.
When searching for affordable accommodation, look beyond the large, expensive hotels located directly on Krupówki Street. The most budget-friendly options are often found slightly further away in residential areas, known as Pokoje Gościnne (guesthouses) or Pensions. These private lodgings offer clean, simple rooms, sometimes with shared kitchen access, providing a genuine sense of Polish hospitality at a fraction of the cost of a hotel. Another excellent option is renting a room or small apartment via platforms like Airbnb in the villages just outside Zakopane, such as Kościelisko or Poronin, which are well-connected by local transport and offer cheaper rates and a more peaceful environment. Hostels are also available in the center for solo travelers and backpackers.
For affordable travel, minimize reliance on expensive taxis. Zakopane’s town center is very walkable, and the main attractions like the start of Krupówki and the Gubałówka funicular are easily reached on foot. For accessing hiking trailheads (like Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko) or the thermal baths, utilize the frequent and incredibly inexpensive local minibuses (known as busy). These minibuses gather primarily near the main bus and train station (Dworzec) and offer a cheap, efficient, and authentic way to navigate the region. If traveling from Kraków, taking the public bus is usually more affordable and sometimes quicker than the train.
To save money on food and fun, focus on self-catering and free activities. Instead of eating every meal on the main street, visit a local supermarket (like Biedronka or Lidl) to buy groceries and prepare simple meals at your guesthouse. When you do eat out, choose traditional Karczmas located slightly off Krupówki for better value. For fun, remember that the Tatra Mountains National Park offers hundreds of kilometers of free trails , making hiking or cross-country skiing the ultimate free activity (excluding the park entrance fee, which is minimal). Strolling along Równia Krupowa park for mountain views and window shopping on Krupówki are entirely free ways to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Polish Highlands.
