This is a gentle introduction to dog sledding rather than an expedition, which makes it one of the easiest winter activities to do with children. A private car with an English-speaking driver takes you to a small village about 20 minutes from Zakopane, where the instructors and their huskies are waiting.
The programme lasts around an hour. The instructors show you how the sled is handled and share some background on dog sledding, and there is time to meet the dogs and take photos. Then each person rides as a passenger for up to 15 minutes, covering 2–3 km, and you can try ‘driving’ the sled yourself. Riding time depends on group size, the weather and how fast the dogs are running.
Each sled takes either a single adult, an adult plus one child, or two children, up to 100 kg in total, and no more than two sleds run at once, so the pace stays relaxed. The whole outing, including the drive both ways, takes about two hours.
