If you have already walked to Morskie Oko from Zakopane and want a quieter mountain lake, Zelené pleso (Green Lake) on the Slovak side of the Tatras is a good next step. It sits in a high valley beneath the rock walls of the High Tatras, at roughly 1,550 m, and its water often takes on the green tint that gives it its name. Right on the shore stands a mountain hut with a terrace, where hikers stop for a hot meal or a drink with a view.
This trip is built around freedom. We drive you from Zakopane to the trailhead in the Slovak Tatras and back, and in between you have up to seven hours to walk up, explore the lakeshore, take photos and rest at the hut before hiking down. The walk climbs through forest and opens onto views of the surrounding peaks; on the descent you see the same landscape from the other direction.
Prefer company on the trail? A guided hike can be arranged on request. Take your passport or ID card for the border, good hiking shoes and layers for changeable mountain weather.
