Morskie Oko, ‘the Eye of the Sea’, is the largest lake in the Tatras, the classic day trip from Zakopane and one of the best-known mountain lakes in Europe. It sits at 1,395 m in the Rybi Potok valley, a glacial bowl ringed by rock walls that tower up to around 1,000 m above the water, and beside it stands one of the oldest mountain shelters in the range, a good place for a traditional Polish meal.
Getting there is easy. From Palenica Białczańska (990 m), the trailhead half an hour from Zakopane, the red route climbs gently for about 8 km, roughly 2.5 hours on foot. Halfway you pass Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza, whose cascades rumble like thunder after heavy rain, and the opening of Dolina Białej Wody, where on clear days you can spot Gerlach, at 2,655 m the highest peak of the Tatras and of the whole Carpathians. At the lake you have about an hour for lunch, photos and a stroll along the shore, then around 2 hours back down.
With the guided option, a private guide who speaks your language walks with you. With the driver-only option, you get up to 6 hours to go at your own pace while the driver waits at the car park. Tatra National Park tickets are included in both.
